In 2008 our MK Youth Board had the opportunity to take to the road and upskill other young people wanting to make change through a new MK initiative, The Quest. Through a BHP Nickel West sponsorship our crew hit the road and worked with young people in Kalgoorlie – Kambalda, Esperance and Kwinana. Young people had to identify environmental issues in their local community and develop an Olympic style event to bring the community together and raise awareness about the issues. Using the Olympic sustainability principles as a starting point over 500 young people developed local projects for local communities.
The young people in Esperance designed their own sustainable surf event with young people highlighting the plight of the leafy sea dragon, a local endangered species. The team helped revegetate local areas, learnt event management skills and held a waste free surf event ….and they even remembered to car pool to the event on the day to reduce traffic to the surf site.
The team of young leaders came together at the end of the surf event at Bremer Bay for a youth leadership course and completed a Certificate 1 in Leadership Development.
