Climate change has been on our mind since 1996 and in 2024 all the work behind the scenes paid off. With a grant from the US Government and support from Perth Airport a new look deliberative democracy process, Agents of Climate Change, was launched with funds for students to undertake key initiatives to reduce their impact on the planet. The program ended with a Celebrate event at the end of the year bringing together 100 young people to share their projects and take part in a leadership program.
Hillcrest Primary School, Guildford Primary School, Belmont City College and Brabham Primary School students were supported and mentored by Millennium Kids youth leaders to through a program that focussed on Education, Deliberation, Action and Influence. The report was sent to Federal and State Government representatives, our young leads presented at AAEE Sustainability Educators conference and KNOCA Knowledge Network on Climate Assemblies – taking their voice to the world.
More importantly Perth Airpot funded a range of projects developed by the students at each school. Check out the school case studies here.
In addition to the Agents of Climate Change MK continued various initiatives including:
- Kids on Country Coolgardie fieldtrips and mentoring programs as part of an ARC Linkage grant research project looking at the Intergenerational Transfer of Indigenous Knowledges with support from Edith Cowan University. Notre Dame University. Nulungu Research Institute, Water Corporation, Wyemando Bequest, Lotterywest, Services Australia and Judumul Aboriginal Corporation.
- GreenLAB programs with City of Swan, City of Melville, Shire of Mundaring and Friends of Lake Claremont focussed on caring for waterways, bushland and wetlands and school grounds with a focus on getting to know each site, planning a 2071 vision and protecting monitoring and increasing tree canopy . - RAC Ignite Leadership Program saw our team of youth leaders co facilitate a new cohort of young people in the program in collaboration with the RAC.
- Kids on Country Dryandra Woodland saw the development of a new program with 54 family members from the Wilman Corporation visit Pumphreys Bridge and the Dryandra woodland to hear from the kids. Thanks to a Science Week grant , WA Multicultural Lions and a generous donor the three days of activity helped the Wilman Corporation develop a Strategic Plan for youth involvement with regard to caring for country.
