The rate of urban deforestation across Perth has left some local government areas with only 10% tree canopy and 60% hard surfaces such as roads, footpaths and carparks. Much of the remaining canopy is natural areas on school grounds which is a valuable outdoor learning area that supports education for sustainability as a key component of the Western Australian Curriculum.
Green Lab is a youth-led citizen science program to monitor, protect and increase canopy across the Perth metropolitan area, and you are invited to a professional learning day as follows:
When: Thursday 28 January 2021 8:30am – 3:30pm
Where: Henderson Environmental Centre, Lot 709 Groat Street, North Beach
Who: Year 5 – 10 teachers, school administrators and local government officers, Home Schoolers, P&C and Parents
Free, BYO lunch, free workshop handbook with curriculum links, access to Green Lab Online Challenge (a partnership with Curtin University)
Participants will be supported with the skills, knowledge and support to realise the value of some of our priceless, natural community assets aka ‘green labs’ or ‘outdoor classrooms’: https://vimeo.com/481216412
