Special Green Teams Project

(For schools in New South Wales, Queensland and Victoria only)


Background:
Each year Millennium Kids conducts a "Postcard to the New Millennium" campaign where young people from around Australia have the opportunity to develop project ideas about how they can help the environment.

Schools in New South Wales, Queensland and Victoria nominated projects that fell into the following categories:

  • Adopt Regional Tree Planting Project
  • Adopt a Local Threatened Native Species Project
  • Water Resources and Pollution Project

Nominate a Project:
The Mazda Foundation has kindly sponsored the development of three Special Green Teams Projects in 2001. Millennium Kids aims to identify three core projects by 31st May 2001. If your school has a project idea that falls into one of the three categories listed above then fill in the Mazda Foundation Grant form in the Forms section along with an outline of your intended project.

Project Criteria:
A Green Teams Project must:

  • Be set up on a voluntary basis where young people who want to be involved in it have identified the project.
  • Be of a particular concern to the young people and something about which they feel they can take practical action.
  • Provide practical Training and hands on opportunities so that young people can measure the practical successes and devlop useful skills as well.
  • Be set up so that it supports project self management by young people.
  • Supply progress reports at least two a year, to the Millennium Kids Youth Board and Council.
  • Encourage young people tpo express their views on environmental and citizenship issues in their local community, particularl\ily through the media.
  • Be of benefit to the environment.
  • Participants in a Green Teams Project must present a report, written or multi media presentation, that can be tabled at the Millennium Kids Helping Kids Environmental Conference.

Grant Details:
Schools that are selected as a Special Green Teams Project will receive a grant of $2500.00 to go towards on the grounds costs associated with their project development. Winners will receive a Grant Agreement that will need to be signed by a representing agency (school, service club or local council) and a final report detailing activities and budget expenditure will need to be forwarded to the Millennium Kids Office by 1st October 2001.

Basic Project Plans

Adopt a Regional Tree Planting Project

General Tasks
School Based Action
School based activities to learn about Landcare Identify the Landcare issue in their state. Communicate with Landcare stakeholders
Identify range of conservation needs. Undertake a site visit to area of need.
Liaise with community stakeholders. Meet with community stakeholders to identify issues and discuss plan of action kids could undertake.
Consult with stakeholders as to the species required to address issue.
Identify a particular project activity that the young people want to become involved in. Students identify regional tree planting project for the year.Students undertake propagation and seed collection training program.Infrastructure support identified for ongoing needs of program i.e. build shadehouse.
Develop implementation plan for project. Submit implementation plan to Millennium Kids and other stakeholders for feedback.
Participate in activity. Site visit for tree planting activity.Take photographs for public relations purposes.
Undertake local publicity Students write media release and photograph about their Millennium Kids Green Team tree planting activities and submit to Millennium Kids for their website.
Students also distribute story and photo to local media, school newsletter and local Council.
Monitor and evaluate progress Write 2 progress reports based on Millennium Kids Evaluation Criteria and submit to Millennium Kids. Based on this, the Clean Up Australia Foundation will write a twelve month progress reports to funder (Mazda Foundation).
Conference report to Millennium Kids Prepare mini presentation in video( 3.30 minutes), power point for showcasing at the Millennium Kids conference.

Adopt a Local Threatened Native Species Project (QLD)

General Tasks
School Based Action
School based activities to learn about the animal habitat and breeding behaviours. Identify range of native animals being endangered.
Research animals native to the local area.
Identify range of conservation needs. Undertake a site visit to area of need or zoo to learn what possible role can be undertaken by students
Liaise with community stakeholders. Meet with community stakeholders to identify issues and discuss plan of action kids could undertake.
Consult with stakeholders as to the species to be addressed.
Identify a particular project activity that the young people want to become involved in. Students identify particular animal they want to adopt for the year.Students determine actions they will undertake to protect or conserve the animal.Infrastructure support identified for ongoing needs of program eg building frog friendly gardens.
Develop implementation plan for project. Submit implementation plan to Millennium Kids for feedback
Participate in activity. Site visit for animal conservation or preservation activity.
Take photographs for public relations purposes.
Undertake local publicity Undertake local publicity Students write media release and photograph about their Millennium Kids Green Team native animal conservation/preservation activities and submit to Millennium Kids for their website.
Students also distribute story and photo to local media, school newsletter and local Council.

Water Resources and Pollution Project

General Tasks
School Based Action
School based activities to learn about local water issues. Identify range of water resource and pollution issues.
Research local area water issues.
Identify range of conservation needs Undertake a site visit to area of need so students can "see" what possible role can be undertaken by students.
Liaise with community stakeholders. Meet with community stakeholders to identify issues and discuss plan of action kids could undertake.
Identify particular project activity that young people want to become involved in. Students identify particular water problem they want to adopt for the year.Students determine actions they will undertake to address the water issue.Infrastructure support identified for ongoing needs of program eg water quality monitoring
Develop implementation plan for project. Develop and submit implementation plan to Millennium Kids for feedback
Participate in activity Site visit for testing or monitoring in partnership with local government or other agency.
Take photographs for public relations purposes.
Undertake local publicity Students write media release and photograph about their Millennium Kids Green Team native animal conservation/preservation activities and submit to Millennium Kids for their website.
Students also distribute story and photo to local media, school newsletter and local Council.
