| North Balga Primary School Goes Frog Friendly |
Green Team Projects - Animal Preservation
 North Balga Primary School
1-Dec-00 | North Balga Primary School students recently visited the Herdsman Lake Wildlife Centre to take part in a series of frog activities. Paul Reiffer, the Education Officer, talked to the children about the types of frogs found in the wetland and the children listened to a tape of the frog calls.
The children then journeyed along the boardwalk and tried to find frogs in the wild.
“It was really hard trying to find the frogs in the reeds because they were camouflaged.” One of the students said. “The frogs were the same colour as the reeds.”
North Balga Primary School will be building a series of frog ponds in their gardens.

Green Team Projects - Animal Preservation
 Millennium Kids Conference Delegates
1-Oct-00 | The Frogs, Phascogales and other Native Creatures workshop at this 2000 Millennium Kids Helping Kids Environmental Conference focussed on building a frog friendly pond in the grounds of Fairbridge. The steps used by the Millennium Kids to build a frog pond are listed below.
1. Find a suitable area.
2. Rake away any stones.
3. Shovel a shallow hole in the cleared area.
4. Cover with thick waterproof plastic.
5. Lay a few rocks around the edge to weigh down the plastic.
6. Pour a little bit of water in hole.
7. Put dry clay around the edge.
8. Water down the clay.
9. Fill the pond with water.
10. Put native rushes in and around the pond.
HINTS:
* Find some frogs and/or tadpoles and carefully put them into the pond.
* If any of your frogs escape, don’t worry, maybe the frog didn’t like your pond.
* Don’t try to catch the frog, because it can get stressed out.
* Frog ponds need some sun.
* To help attract frogs, place native flowering plants to attract insects, which frogs feed off.
* Use native water plants for the tadpoles to shelter in.
* If mosquitos are a big problem, put in one local native fish. Be careful though, as lots of fish eat the frog’s eggs.

| Children Monitor Local Lake |
Green Team Projects - Water Polution
 Hollywood Primary School
1-Sep-00 | Children from Year 6/7 from Hollywood Primary School took their Year 1/ 2 buddies to the Sir Charles Gairdner Lake to do some water sampling activities.
The children had to scoop out a bucket of water and then test it. They looked to see if they could find any of the tiny creatures that live in the water. They are called macro invertebrates. They found lots of different things, but they didn’t find any tadpoles or frogs.
“The children found lots of water life, including dragonfly and caddisfly larvae, which indicated the water was in fair condition. We didn’t find any evidence of frog life. The children were taking part in the Ribbons of Blue Snapshot program.

| Hop To It Day |
Green Team Projects - Animal Preservation
 Kilsyth Primary School
21-Oct-01 - 21-May-03 | Millennium Kids Green Team - Kilsyth Primary School Frog Bog
Hop To It Day
On Wednesday 21st May 2003 the students of Kilsyth Primary with some help from parents and some students from Pembroke Secondary School got together to build the frog bog and a sensory path. We built our frog bog and made a path that leads to it.
We've been in a drought but you wouldn't have known it. The frog bog, which had already been shaped in an earlier working bee, was already full of water. Water that we had to empty out to get the liner in! Mud glorious Mud! It was everywhere!
Thank you Millennium Kids, the Mazda Foundation and Alcoa World Alumina Australia.
The grades three, four, fives and sixes were split up into groups to work on the path and the frog bog.
The path.
With the help of parents the path was made by firstly scraping the topsoil to the side. We used this to plant the plants in to form the basis of our sensory trail. Then we laid down crushed rock for the path.
The Frog Bog
We needed to make a walkway across the Frog Bog that we made with sleepers. In one end of the Frog Bog we put a rubber liner. Then we put in hollow stumps and some water plants. We had to get the water out of the other end of the Frog Bog for a special Butil Liner to go in. The students and parents formed lines to pass the buckets of water to each other to get it out of the Frog Bog and we were left with plenty of Bog!
What an exciting. Productive and fantastic day! The Frog Bog looks wonderful and we can't wait to get to work on more planting and landscaping of the Frog Bog.
By the way we hope to have Brown Tree Frogs, striped Marsh Frogs and maybe Pobblebonk Frogs by Spring.
