Act on decisions by identifying how they might appropriately participate in community activities such as Clean Up Australia Day and school Friday Clean Up.

9. Writing

Students write for a range of purposes and in a range of forms using conventions appropriate to audience, purpose and context.

Plan, draft, revise, edit and publish writing forms to present their School Friday Clean Up Australia advertising material.
 


Purpose

This series of activities provide the opportunity for students to:

  Publish a newsletter article
  Participate in a community service activity.
  Undertake the From Clean Up to Fix Up Survey.

 

Preparation

  Prepare butchers paper and large markers
  Let the local council know the site that have you have adopted and arrange with them to pick up the rubbish from a designated point.
  Register your "Clean Up to Fix Up" Survey Site on 9388 0033 or Fax 9388 9366 by filling in Resource Sheet 4 and Resource Sheet 5 and post to Clean Up Australia, 417 Rokeby Road, Subiaco, WA 6008 before 24 March 2000.


Procedure

1. Divide students into groups of three to discuss their Fix Up ideas and to answer Q6. to Q8 of the Clean Up to Fix Up Survey. Use ideas collected on butchers paper previously. (Use Resource Sheet 4).

2. Write a press release about the adopted site. Include Where? Why? When? How? Who? in your press release . Contact the local newspaper to organise a photographer to meet the class at the site. Send the release to the newspaper. Also include the article in the school newsletter.

3. Students can work collaboratively to present their survey findings including their recommendations for action.

Brainstorm ways students can present their report - poster, video, powerpoint presentation, written report, play or poem, photographic displays.

Send the report to local council and a supportive community group asking for support and assistance for some of the student initiatives.

4. Complete the Clean Up to Fix Up Registration Form (Resource Sheet 5) and return to the Perth Clean Up office.

Variations

Write a report on your days activities. Scan your photographs and create a webpage to be linked to your school website.
