About
Millennium Kids is a Not for Profit Organisation.
We’re based in Western Australia with outreach programs and partnerships in Java, South Africa and Malaysia.
The organisation is run by young people and was established in 1996 in response to their demand to have a say about their environment and their world.
Who are we?
We are a group of young people aged 10 – 25 years who are committed to improving our environment through constructive action. Our programs are directed by our Youth Board and are supported by United Nations Declaration Agenda 21 Chapter 25 “national governments should pay more attention to the opinions and concerns of young people regarding the environment.”
What do we do?
Our aim is to develop local, regional and international partnerships which empower young people to explore, identify and address environmental issues through information exchange, membership networks and on the ground action and development of youth leadership issues.
How we do it?
Millennium Kids Inc consults with young people using the MK Ten Step Inquiry Methodology to find out what young people like about their community, what they don’t like about their community and what they want to change. Through the process young people identify issues and concerns and look at the challenges and opportunities to solve these problems. The ten step, multi stakeholder process allows young people to research the issue, consult with stakeholders, learn new skills and develop a plan to address their concerns. Most importantly, young people get to put their plans into action and evaluate their own programs. The process can be school or community based. The MK Ten Step Inquiry Methodology can be used as a consultation step with Australian Sustainable Schools Initiative – the youth voice process.
Dr Switch – Switch Your thinking!
Meet Dr Switch and Professor R, cartoon characters, developed by members of Millennium Kids to represent their view that the community – locally, regionally and globally, needs to switch its thinking in relation to the environment and sustainability. Dr Switch was developed in the lead up to the COP15 Conference in Denmark 2009 when 4 members of Millennium Kids attended the Bright Green Youth conference to discuss climate change issues with 500 other young people from around the world. With a light globe for a head Dr Switch represents energy efficiency and new thinking. His solar powered suitcase is full of bright ideas to help tackle sustainability issues. He is fun, colourful and energetic in keeping with the MK philosophy and he may even share some chocolate on the way! You will see him in various locations where Millennium Kids works to remind you to think about an issue, care about it enough to do something and then do it!
In 2012 the young girls and women in MK wanted Dr Switch to be accompanied by an equally creative character who was female . Professor R was born. Once again many young people drew their ideas and sent them to Millennium Kids. Professor R will be used in resources and in marketing material to give anoth
er voice to young people’s ideas about sustainability.
- Switch your thinking – you can do it!
